The Academy of Poetry and Creative Writing is an extension of The Beatnix. The Beatnix, a Fairfax High School club that is mentored by Greenway Teaching Artists, explores poetry and uses the art form as a means for the students to fully express themselves. Putting pen to pad, or fingers to keyboard, each member of The Beatnix and the Academy of Poetry and Creative Writing is able to craft a piece of work that undeniably gives credibility to their voice. The lesson learned is the value of sharing the moments we all experience while honing the ability to construct the words in a way that makes the experience seem somehow new. To further enhance the club, Greenway invites professional poets, writers and guest speakers to participate in select sessions.
The Beatnix meet every Wednesday during lunch to share their work with their peers in a safe, comfortable environment. After school the members can attend the Academy of Poetry and Creative Writing sessions to write, bond and learn more about publishing, blogging, spoken word and the art of performing. Rap, rhyme or cipher - it's all poetry and it's all welcome at The Beatnix and the Academy of Poetry and Creative Writing.
Thanks to our generous donors and supporters, participation is free for students enrolled in Fairfax High School. For more information on this program email info@greenwayartsalliance.org. We hope to hear from you soon.
