They
Shoot Horses, Don't They?
An original stage adaptation of Horace McCoy's depression-era
novel, by Rick Sparks & Gary Carter, was the highlight
of the 2000-2001 season at GREENWAY Court Theater.
They
Shoot Horses... premiered March 23rd, took audiences
on an environmental noir journey back in time to a place
where a sweaty dance floor could mean three meals a
day, a giant cash prize, and a chance to be somebody.
The show takes a startling look at the dreams, desperation,
and exploitation of dance marathon hopefuls who have
gathered inside the LaMonica Ballroom on the Santa Monica
Pier.
They Shoot Horses... scored highly among the critics;
The LA Times chose the production as "Best Bet"; The
Hollywood Reporter called the production "...Stunning";

Stage West also bestowed the show with the coveted "Critic's
Pick"; IN Los Angeles magazine gave four of 4 stars;
The Tolucan Times raves "...brilliant, and flawless
production".
In addition, KPCC and KCSN spoke exquisitely of the
caliber of talent, adaptation, and direction. They Shoot Horses... won 6 of 7 Drama Circle awards that
the show was nominated: for best Production, Director,
Adaptation, Featured Performance, Costume Design, and
Makeup/Hair/Wig Design. In addition, They Shoot Horses...
won 3 LA Weekly Awards: for best Production, Ensemble,
and Direction.
