25,000 Years of Fairfax District History
GALLERY OF PRODUCTION PHOTOS

In celebration of the unique qualities of its local community, GREENWAY Arts Alliance presents "The History of Fairfax According to a Sandwich," an original play spotlighting the amazing events and colorful personalities that have contributed to the historical significance and multicultural diversity of the Fairfax District.

Cast members of "The History of Fairfax According to a Sandwich" who portray important figures in the legacy of the Fairfax District (including the Gilmore family, actor Lou Costello and gangster Mickey Cohen), join GREENWAY Arts Alliance co-artistic directors Whitney Weston and Pierson Blaetz on the steps of GREENWAY Court Theatre -- itself an historic local building built in 1939.

"It covers everything from woolly mammoths to matzoh balls," says Whitney Weston, GREENWAY co-artistic director and one of the producers. "More an allegory than a history lesson, the show has humor and great intelligence - it will appeal to a wide audience, not just Fairfax residents."

The legacy of the Fairfax District begins 250 centuries ago at the treacherous La Brea Tar Pits, and moves through time all the way to the vendor booths at the Farmer's Market. What became the oldest ongoing Jewish community in Los Angeles now incorporates a colorful influx of communities, including Russian and Latino, with a charming, "old-world" feeling surrounding the mostly family-owned shops and restaurants.

"The History of Fairfax According to a Sandwich" - the curious title is explained in the final scene - was a commission by GREENWAY Arts Alliance of noted Los Angeles playwright, Leon Martell, who describes it as "an archeological dig … sifting through the layers, we find shards of the past that enable us to understand where the present came from."

Fairfax businesses and organizations are involved in the celebration through discount tickets programs and participation in the play's gala opening night party at Cantor's.

Presented by GREENWAY Arts Alliance and directed by Jon Shear, "The History of Fairfax According to a Sandwich".
